October 23, (THEWILL) – There was drama at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday when businessman and social media influencer, Afolabi Michael Kazeem, popularly known as KC Luxury, was brought to court in an ambulance while receiving oxygen, amid concerns over his deteriorating health.
Kazeem, who is standing trial over alleged conspiracy to export 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine to the United Kingdom and money laundering, was reportedly too ill to enter the courtroom.
The development occurred during proceedings before Justice Musa Kakaki, as the court considered a fresh bail application seeking Kazeem’s release to enable him obtain specialised medical treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
A correctional officer first informed the court that Kazeem was critically ill and had been hospitalised.
The officer subsequently called Bukki Yahya, a nurse attending to the defendant at the Police Hospital, Falomo, Lagos, to explain his condition.
Yahya told the court that Kazeem required intensive care and could not be moved into the courtroom because of his condition.
She disclosed that the defendant had been admitted to the hospital on October 7, 2026, and diagnosed with asthma and sepsis.
The revelation prompted concern from Kazeem’s counsel, Emefo Etudo, who questioned why his client was brought to court despite his critical condition.
“If, for instance, the defendant was in the intensive care unit and is like this, why should they bring him to court?” Etudo asked.
Following the nurse’s testimony, Justice Kakaki directed that Kazeem be returned to the hospital.
“You can take him back to the hospital,” the judge ordered.
Defence Alleges Collapsed Lung
Arguing the fresh bail application, Etudo told the court that Kazeem’s condition had deteriorated and that he required specialised medical attention that was allegedly unavailable at the Police Hospital.
The lawyer alleged that the defendant had suffered a collapsed lung and required specialist treatment.
According to Etudo, the Police Hospital had referred Kazeem to LUTH because it lacked the facilities required to manage his condition surgically.
The defence counsel further alleged that Kazeem was withdrawn from LUTH and taken to a correctional centre on October 13 despite his medical condition.
He said the defendant’s health deteriorated while he was being conveyed to the correctional facility, forcing those accompanying him to return him to the Police Hospital.
Kazeem was subsequently admitted into the intensive care unit, the lawyer said. The defence is asking the court to grant Kazeem bail to enable him receive specialised treatment at LUTH.
Etudo urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, assuring that his client would attend subsequent proceedings.
He also told the court that Kazeem’s international passport was already in the custody of the authorities.

Prosecution Opposes Fresh Bail
The prosecution opposed the application, with its counsel, Abu Ibrahim, arguing that the medical issues raised by the defence had substantially been considered by the court in an earlier ruling.
Ibrahim maintained that Kazeem’s underlying ailment remained asthma, although it might have become more acute.
The prosecutor also faulted the defence for allegedly failing to provide medical documentation from LUTH establishing that the hospital could not manage Kazeem’s condition. He urged the court to dismiss the fresh bail application, arguing that Kazeem was a flight risk.
Ibrahim further asked the court to impose stringent conditions should Justice Kakaki decide to grant bail.
The defence, however, maintained that Kazeem’s worsening condition warranted his release for specialised medical treatment.
