August 26, (THEWILL) – Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon won the gold medal in the women’s 5000 metres at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday, adding to her earlier victory in the 1500m event.
29-year-old Kipyegon took control of the race with around two laps to go and pulled away from the pack to finish in a time of 14 minutes and 53.88 seconds. It was a dominant performance from the Kenyan, who has shown incredible form this season, as her victories certainly demonstrate.
Coming in second place was Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who claimed the silver medal with a time of 14:54.11 after taking bronze in the 1500m earlier in the competition. Rounding out the podium was Beatrice Chebet, another Kenyan, who clocked 14:54.33 to win the bronze medal in the 5000m.
Kipyegon’s gold medal double in Doha caps off a phenomenal championship showing for the Kenyan and underscores her status as the world’s top middle-distance runner.
