September 28, (THEWILL) – Liverpool came from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night, and book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. With their heavy squad rotation, the English Premier League giants were made to work hard for the win against a resolute Leicester side.
The Foxes took a shock early lead through Kasey McAteer after capitalising on a defensive error. However, Liverpool quickly assumed control of the game, peppering the Leicester goal with attempts. Youngsters Ben Doak and Jarell Quansah went close, while Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo also had chances saved.
The pressure finally told just after half-time when Gakpo coolly finished to draw Liverpool level. The Reds continued to dominate and were unfortunate when Gakpo’s header came back off the bar. But the introduction of big money signings Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez from the bench made the difference.
Szoboszlai in particular announced his arrival with a thunderbolt of a shot from distance that arrowed into the top corner. Leicester argued for a late penalty after appeals were waved away, before Diogo Jota confirmed Liverpool’s passage with a nonchalant flick finish from Jarrell Quansah’s cross.
In the end, Liverpool’s strength in depth shone through against a spirited Leicester performance. The win keeps their Carabao Cup defence on track as attention turns back to the EPL where a visit to Tottenham Hotspur awaits.
