BEVERLY HILLS, April 10, (THEWILL) – American rapper-hip hop musician and actor, DMX, has died.
Aged 50, he lost the battle for life on Friday, five days after he suffered a heart attack that plunged him into an unresponsive and vegetative state.
DMX, whose real name was Earl Simmons, had been on life support since his affliction began.
He is said to be survived by 15 children.
Sources said he died with his family by his side.
In a statement announcing the death, Simon’s family said, “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.
“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him.
“Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever.
“We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time.
“Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalised.
“White Plains Hospital extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Simmons, as well as his friends and legions of fans who expressed their unwavering support during this difficult time. Earl Simmons passed away peacefully with family present after suffering a catastrophic cardiac arrest.”
DMX, aka Dark Man X, was one of US’S leading rappers and a hip-hop performer with several collaborations that included duets with artistes like JAY-Z and LL Cool J.
DMX, who also acted in some movies, had chart-bursting songs that included, “Party Up (Up in Here)” and “X Gon’ Give It To Ya.”
He sold millions of records and was nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Born in Mount Vernon in the state of New York on December 18, 1970, Earl Simmons was the first and only child of Arnett Simmons and Joe Barker, a much travelled performer whom the son hardly saw throughout a rather troubled early life.
