February 01, (THEWILL) – Novak Djokovic’s latest victory at the Australian Open has been described as “remarkable” after it was revealed that he competed with a three-centimetre tear in his hamstring.

Despite the injury, Djokovic managed to secure a record-equaling 22nd Grand Slam singles title, with his left leg heavily strapped throughout the tournament. He also required regular treatments and was forced to skip training sessions between matches.

Australian Open CEO, Craig Tiley, dismissed any speculation regarding the severity of Djokovic’s injury, saying “I don’t think anyone can question his athleticism.” Tiley revealed that he had seen the scans and that the Serb had suffered a three-centimetre tear in his hamstring. Djokovic’s latest triumph in Melbourne took his tally to 10 Australian Open titles and drew him level with Rafael Nadal on 22 for the total number of Grand Slam singles titles.

Djokovic responded to those doubting the extent of his injury during the tournament, hinting that he may one day show proof of how bad the issue really was.

He said, “Only my injuries are questioned…I don’t feel that I need to prove anything to anyone.” He added that he has the MRI and ultrasound scans, both from two years ago and now, but whether he will publish them in his documentary or on social media depends on how he feels.
