November 15, (THEWILL) – The Australian government has decided to lift the visa suspension imposed on Novak Djokovic, which will see the Serbian become eligible to compete at the Australian Open in 2023.
As THEWILL reported, the 35-year-old, who is now competing in the year-end ATP Finals, was deported just before the 2022 tournament began and had his visa revoked “in the public interest.” But, as disclosed by sources close to Andrew Giles, Australia’s Immigration Minister, Djokovic’s automatic three-year ban will be overturned.
Craig Tiley, the Director of the Australian Open, had earlier on Tuesday, stated that he was still awaiting a judgement on the matter. He said: “There’s a normal visa application process that everyone is going through right now, and everyone will go through the right timing.
“I don’t think there should be any preferential treatment for anyone. But, I fully expect to have an answer for everyone by the time that they need to book their flights and come in, including Novak. That’s entirely up to the Australian government. I know Novak wants to come and play and get back to competing.
“He loves Australia and it’s where he’s had the best success but the timing [on any announcement] is up to somebody else and we’ll just play that one by ear.”
Although Australian travel regulations now specify that you do not need confirmation of a COVID-19 vaccine to go to and from the country, the January saga that preceded the year’s first Grand Slam was caused by Djokovic’s refusal to have a COVID-19 vaccination.
He is a nine-time Australian Open titles champion and will be on the way to his 10th next year.
