March 17, (THEWILL) – World number one, Novak Djokovic, has withdrawn from the upcoming ATP-WTA Miami Open, set to take place next week. The 36-year-old Serbian star announced his decision on social media platform X citing scheduling reasons as the primary factor behind his absence.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, had initially planned to compete in Miami following his unexpected third-round exit at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this week. However, in a brief statement, he revealed his intention to balance his professional and personal commitments at this stage of his illustrious career.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be playing the Miami Open this year”, Djokovic wrote. “At this stage of my career, I’m balancing my private and professional schedule. I’m sorry that I won’t experience some of the best and most passionate fans in the world. I’m looking forward to competing in Miami in the future!”
The Serbian’s withdrawal from the Miami Open came as a surprise, as he had expressed his desire to participate in the tournament after his shocking loss to Italian Luca Nardi at Indian Wells. Djokovic’s statement did not provide any indication of his next scheduled appearance on the ATP Tour.
This development has undoubtedly left tennis fans and pundits speculating about the reasons behind Djokovic’s decision and his plans for the remainder of the 2024 season.
