February 27, (THEWILL) – Tennis superstar, Novak Djokovic, has broken yet another record, surpassing Steffi Graf’s longstanding achievement for the most weeks as world number one in tennis history.
The Serbian player’s 378th week at the top of the men’s rankings has secured his place in history. He first held the title in 2011 and has topped the rankings seven times, more than any other player, this time coming after he won the Australian Open for a record-extending 10th time.
Djokovic shares the record for most-ever men’s Grand Slam singles titles with Rafael Nadal and holds the record for most Masters titles with 38. Yet, despite his many successes, Djokovic still trails behind tennis greats such as Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Jimmy Connors, and Ivan Lendl, who all held the top spot for longer than Djokovic’s longest continuous run of 122 weeks.
Nonetheless, the 35-year-old remains a formidable force in the sport and will next compete in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. He has had an incredible career so far, having completed a non-calendar year Grand Slam in singles, to become the only man in tennis history to be the reigning champion of the four majors at once across three different surfaces.
However, his bid for a calendar-year Slam came up short last year after he lost in the US Open final to Daniil Medvedev. Despite this setback, Djokovic shows no signs of slowing down and will undoubtedly continue to dominate the world of tennis for years to come.
