March 18, (THEWILL) – Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one tennis player, will miss the Miami Open, after being denied entry to the United States.

The Serbian star had applied for a special exemption to enter the country without taking the COVID-19 vaccination, but his request was rejected. US rules require international visitors to provide proof of vaccination until at least April 10.

Miami Open tournament director, James Blake, expressed his disappointment over Djokovic’s absence, saying: “Obviously, we’re one of the premier tournaments in the world, we’d like to have the best players that can play.” He added that they had tried to talk to the government, but it was out of their hands.

THEWILL recalls that Djokovic was also forced to withdraw from Indian Wells for the same reasons, and he has not played in North America since losing the 2021 US Open final.

Despite missing the Miami Open, Djokovic is expected to return to action during early April at the Monte Carlo Masters. Meanwhile, the Miami Open is set to commence on March 21 without the participation of the world’s top-ranked player.
