October 21, (THEWILL) – Three years after being banned for bribery, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reinstated Salisu Yusuf as the Super Eagles assistant coach and the head coach of the home-based Eagles.

The former Rangers coach previously held the position under Gernot Rohr, but he resigned after being caught on camera accepting bribes to sway his team selection.

During the WAFU Cup in Ghana in 2018, renowned undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas led the team that exposed former Nigerian assistant coach Salisu Yusuf in a sting operation.

Anas’ Tiger Eye Investigation team, posing as footballers’ agents, filmed the 58-year-old trainer collecting $1000 to include two players in the Nigeria squad.

After the documentary aired on the BBC, he was banned from all football-related activities for a year and fined $5,000.

The 59-year-old tactician, however, is back in his former role three years after his suspension. Salisu’s reappointment was confirmed by the NFF in a statement released to the media.

The statement read: “NFF has approved the reinstatement of Coach Salisu Yusuf to his position as Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles and Head Coach of the Super Eagles B team, with effect from 1st November 2021.”

When the Super Eagles play their final two group games in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Salisu is expected to be in the dugout alongside Rohr. He will also be in place as Rohr’s assistant when the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in Cameroon next year.
