Details Of Talks Between UK, UAE Over Man City Charges Withheld Over Economic Concerns

September 22, (THEWILL) – The UK Government has confirmed that correspondence regarding Manchester City’s alleged English Premier League financial breaches has taken place between its embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London.

However, the details are being withheld over concerns that its release could jeopardise diplomatic relations between the UK and United Arab Emirates. The EPL has directed over 100 charges at Manchester City relating to alleged financial reporting violations between 2009 and 2018. The club denies any wrongdoing and claims to have evidence that will clear them.

A Freedom of Information request seeking related communications between UK officials has brought this to light. While the Government acknowledged it holds relevant information, it is refusing to disclose the correspondence. Citing international relations interests, it argues that releasing details on the matter could potentially damage ties with the UAE Government.

The Athletic, which filed the request, is appealing the decision not to release the information. Man City maintains it is not state-owned or funded, despite its owner, Sheikh Mansour, holding prominent political positions in the UAE. Legally, the club is majority-owned by Sheikh Mansour’s private investment company.

The UK and UAE currently enjoy a positive relationship, with major UAE investments in UK infrastructure and technology. It appears the UK Government is concerned that releasing details on its internal discussions of the case could jeopardise this economic partnership.
