December 13, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, following a 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the game in the second half to condemn United to last place in Group A.
The result means United will not even qualify for the Europa League, marking a dismal end to their European campaign this season. It is only the fourth time in history an English Premier League club has finished bottom of their UCL group.
Going into the match, United needed a win plus a favorable result between FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. However, Copenhagen’s victory rendered the outcome at Old Trafford meaningless.
Bayern had already secured top spot in Group A prior to the game. Despite fielding a rotated side, the German champions still had too much quality for a lackluster United outfit. United failed to register more than one shot on target across the 90 minutes. Boos rang out from the Old Trafford crowd at full-time after another woeful performance.
The loss piles more pressure on manager Erik Ten Hag during a difficult season in charge of the 20-time English champions. United now face a similarly daunting trip to rivals Liverpool in the EPL on Sunday.
