January 30, (THEWILL) – Manchester United legend David de Gea was reportedly in talks over a potential move to join Saudi Pro League outfit Al Shabab this January. However, sources close to the deal have revealed that the transfer is now looking unlikely to materialise.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper has been a free agent since leaving Old Trafford last summer. He was initially linked with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Newcastle United, but no deal transpired. Last week, rumours emerged that de Gea was pondering a lucrative switch to the Middle East with Al Shabab.
However, Al Shabab are already well-stocked in the goalkeeping department. Established number one Kim Seung-gyu of South Korea has been solid between the sticks. Promising young Saudi shot-stopper Fawaz Al-Qarni also provides adequate backup. As such, sources suggest Al Shabab have no intentions of pursuing de Gea.
Instead, the club are working on deals for marquee outfield additions. A €30 million swoop for Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron appears tricky before the deadline. Up front, Senegal striker Habib Diallo could depart despite only joining last summer. Atletico Madrid hitman Alvaro Morata is the ideal striking target.
In the long run, Al Shabab harbour ambitions of appointing Jose Mourinho as manager. However, the Portuguese is still weighing up his options after being sacked by Roma.
