October 19, (THEWILL) -Daniel Amokachi and Mercy Akide, both former Nigerian football stars, have been appointed to the IFAB’s football advisory panel.
Amokachi and Akide were among a group of seven people added to the panel, which included ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. Wenger’s appointment comes bundled with his role as FIFA’s Global Football Development Director.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which is responsible for the game’s laws, announced their new members on Twitter, saying they will be introduced officially in the coming days.
According to a statement on the organization’s official Twitter page: “Seven new members have been appointed to The IFAB’s Football Advisory Panel: Mercy Akide, Daniel Amokachi, Kay Cossington, Jillian Ellis, Maxwell Scherrer, Arsène Wenger, Lydia Williams.
“Over the next few days, all new members will be presented in detail.”
Amokachi is a former Nigerian international with 44 caps and two World Cup appearances. He was a member of Nigeria’s golden generation, which won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and the men’s football gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The former Everton midfielder scored in the 3-2 win over Argentina, and he also has the distinction of being the first goal-scorer of the UEFA Champions League with Club Brugge on November 25, 1992, when they beat CSKA Moscow 1-0.
Mercy Akide, for her own part, is a former member of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team. She is the first African woman to win the African Footballer of the Year award. She also won three Africa Women’s Cup of Nations titles and represented Nigeria at three World Cups.
