October 1, (THEWILL) – Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from Portugal’s training camp has divided football fans, with supporters split over whether the veteran forward was right to leave or should have accepted a reduced role under new head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday after Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo would not start Thursday’s UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark.

Ronaldo later announced on social media that he had decided to leave following the coach’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

The Portugal captain did not announce his retirement but said he would explain the reasons behind his decision “in due course”, adding further uncertainty over his international future.

The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently confirmed his departure from the camp.

The dramatic development has since triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with fans offering sharply different opinions about Ronaldo’s decision and his relationship with Jesus.

Fans defend Ronaldo

A section of supporters has rallied behind the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, arguing that his contribution to Portuguese football means he deserves greater respect.

One fan, @saadibins…, praised Ronaldo for what he described as his enormous contribution to Portugal and questioned why Jesus appeared to be treating the forward differently after previously working with him at Al Nassr.

“Ronaldo gave everything to Portugal and to football,” the supporter wrote, before questioning why the coach had apparently changed his approach after working with Ronaldo at club level.

Another fan, @MrAbdul024, took a more sympathetic view of Ronaldo’s decision to leave.

The supporter suggested that Ronaldo may have chosen to keep the details of the disagreement private rather than create further drama around the national team.

“CR7 didn’t want any drama,” the fan wrote, adding that Ronaldo was keeping the reason for his departure to himself while wishing his teammates good luck.

Other supporters argued that a player of Ronaldo’s stature should be allowed to decide how he wants to bring his international career to an end.

One fan wrote that Ronaldo had given Portugal unforgettable moments and suggested that, whatever the circumstances surrounding his departure, his contribution to the country would not be forgotten.

Another supporter expressed concern that Ronaldo could miss out on the farewell he deserves if the current situation eventually leads to the end of his international career.

Others criticise Ronaldo’s decision

Not everyone was sympathetic to the Portugal captain.

Several fans criticised Ronaldo for leaving the camp after being left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway and subsequently being told he would not start against Denmark.

One supporter described the decision as “shameful”, arguing that Ronaldo should consider walking away from international football rather than repeatedly clashing with Portugal managers over playing time.

Another questioned why the forward could not accept a reduced role and allow younger players to take greater responsibility within the squad.

Some supporters also pointed to Ronaldo’s age, arguing that the 41-year-old must recognise that his role with Portugal is changing.

One fan wrote that Ronaldo “can’t cheat nature” and should allow the coach to decide how he is used, while still acknowledging the respect Ronaldo deserves for his career.

Another supporter argued that Ronaldo should have retired from international football after the 2026 World Cup, claiming that his continued presence could restrict opportunities for younger players.

The reaction shows just how divided opinion has become around the Portugal captain.

Ronaldo’s dispute with Jesus

The controversy began after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.

Jesus had indicated that Ronaldo could be introduced during the match, but ultimately chose not to use him despite the forward warming up.

Ronaldo then worked separately in the gym during subsequent sessions, although Jesus denied that the player had refused to train. The coach also insisted there had been no major incident between them.

Speaking before Portugal’s next match, Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo had been disappointed about remaining on the bench but insisted that such a reaction was normal.

He also confirmed that Gonçalo Ramos was expected to start against Denmark, with Ronaldo again set for a substitute role if required.

Jesus’s explanation, however, did little to prevent the controversy from growing.

Ronaldo subsequently left the camp, turning what initially appeared to be a selection dispute into a much bigger discussion about his future with Portugal.

Ronaldo’s “truth” statement fuels speculation

Ronaldo’s decision to promise that he would eventually reveal the truth behind his departure has become another major talking point.

Rather than announcing his retirement, the Portugal captain said he would explain his reasons at a later date before wishing his teammates well.

That distinction is important because Ronaldo has not confirmed that his international career is over.

He remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 international goals and 234 appearances.

Nevertheless, the circumstances surrounding his departure have inevitably led to speculation that his relationship with the national team could be approaching a decisive moment.

Ronaldo’s sister also weighs in

The controversy intensified further after Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, entered the discussion on social media.

Aveiro backed a message criticising the treatment of her brother and questioning the structure surrounding the Portuguese national team and its media coverage.

Her intervention added another layer to an already tense situation involving Ronaldo, Jesus and the Portuguese football authorities.

What happens next?

For now, Ronaldo’s international future remains unresolved.

The forward has left Portugal’s current training camp, but there has been no announcement that he has retired from international football.

Portugal, meanwhile, must continue preparing for its upcoming Nations League fixtures without its captain.

For fans, the debate is no longer simply about whether Ronaldo should start or come off the bench.

It has become a wider question about how one of the greatest players in Portuguese football history should approach the final stage of his international career.

Some believe Ronaldo deserves the authority to decide when and how he leaves.

Others believe his status should not place him above the coach’s selection decisions or prevent Portugal from building towards the future.

With Ronaldo promising to reveal more about the circumstances behind his departure, attention will now turn to what he says next.

Until then, his abrupt exit has left Portugal with an unresolved question: is this simply a temporary disagreement between a legendary player and a new coach, or the beginning of the final chapter of Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career?
