The Will reports that, unlike other states of the federation where the launch of the COVID-19 vaccination exercise were led by the governors and deputy governors just like President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo launched the exercise on national television, it is a different ball game in Akwa Ibom State.

The state government through the Ministry of Health in conjunction with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) at the weekend flagged off COVID-19 vaccination at the Methodist General Hospital, Ituk Mbang, Uruan LGA, without the presence of the governor, his deputy not the Speaker of the state assembly, Hon. Aniekan Bassey who hails from the community.

It is on the media that there was a sense of apprehension over the vaccine with some countries said to have suspended the use of AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine due to the alleged blood clot found among those who received it earlier.

The federal government through the national primary healthcare development agency has however maintained that the vaccines are safe.

In a statement, the agency said it has noted “precautionary concerns” about a specific batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine namely ABV5300 saying investigations have been launched into it.

Statistics from Akwa Ibom shows that 87 persons have tested for covid-9 with 16 returning negative while 71 have tested positive. However, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 5547 persons are currently on admission in the state over COVID-19 while the state has a total of 1,671 cases.
