BEVERLY HILLS, April 26, (THEWILL) – An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court Thursday ordered Samuel Melaye, a sibling of controversial Senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye and three others in Kuje Prison until April 30, 2018, when their bail application is expected to be considered.
They were detained and arraigned by the police for criminal conspiracy, obstruction of public servant from performing his lawful duties, as well as abatement and assault on police officers. The alleged offences occurred when officers tried to transport Senator Melaye to Lokoja, Kogi State for his arraignment on multiple felony charges including illegal possession of firearms.
The three other persons identified in the charge sheet are: Amaefula David, Pius Inyang and Mohammed Wazari.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
THEWILL recalls that the police said the embattled Senator jumped out of a moving police vehicle conveying him to Lokoja from Abuja and was allegedly whisked away by his supporters who were said to have blocked the road with their vehicle. Melaye was subsequently re-arrested at a private hospital where he was admitted for treatment, and later transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja by the Police.
Senator Melaye however countered the police in a statement denying that he jumped out of a police vehicle and accused of the police of trying to kill him.
