BEVERLY HILLS, December 24, (THEWILL) – The Federal High Court in Lagos has rejected the request of convicted Senator, Orji Kalu, for a post-conviction bail.
Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment on the 4th of December, for N7.1 billion fraud.
Although, he has appealed against the judgement at the Court of Appeal, he filed an application last week, to be bailed on health ground, pending the outcome of his appeal.
The convicted Senator claimed that he was battling some health challenges which the medical facilities in the prison could not handle.
Kalu, who is the Chief Whip of the Senate and the lawmaker representing Abia North at the National Assembly, prayed the court to release him on bail in the interest of his constituents.
In a ruling on Monday, Justice Mohammed Liman dismissed Kalu’s post-conviction application for lacking merit.
Kalu will then remain in prison custody pending the decision of the Court of Appeal where he is challenging his conviction, the Judge ruled.
