Commonwealth Games Organisers May Resort To Army’s Help To Fill Staff Shortage

June 09, (THEWILL) – Organisers of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, have said that the British Army is on standby to assist in the filling of 5,000 short-term positions ahead of the opening ceremony.

There are 50 days before the start of the event, which will take place across the city and the West Midlands from July 28 to August 8. Chief Executive, Ian Reid, stated that the military had been contacted and that action will be taken if necessary.

However, as part of a recruitment campaign to fill in these vacancies, leaflets were distributed via doors. According to the organisers, they aim to provide volunteers who sign up with opportunities to learn skills that would help them find work after the Games. There are security, catering, and housekeeping positions still open.

Reid stated: “Up to 5,000 roles are still to be put in place. We’re seeing a huge uptick of the back off the marketing campaign, but there is still a lot of recruitment to be done over the next few weeks.”

Reid added they have a plan A and B in place, with the latter being bringing in the Army, and they were keeping a close eye on the situation when he spoke earlier from the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Up to 13,500 military personnel assisted in providing security during the London Olympic Games in 2012.
