June 21, (THEWILL) – In a disappointing turn of events, Germany endured a 2-0 home defeat against Colombia in a friendly match on Tuesday, adding to their recent struggles less than a year before hosting Euro 2024.

Luis Diaz’s 54th-minute header and Juan Cuadrado’s successful penalty in the 82nd minute secured Colombia’s first-ever victory over the Germans, who were met with boos from the crowd at the final whistle. Germany, currently under pressure to construct a formidable squad for the upcoming continental tournament, had previously salvaged a 3-3 draw against Ukraine with two late goals, only to suffer a 1-0 loss to Poland last Friday.

This latest loss marks a concerning trend for the four-time world champions, having won just one of their last five matches since their shocking World Cup group-stage exit in December 2022, and claiming victory in only three of their past 11 matches. Throughout Tuesday’s match, Colombia showcased a more determined attacking mindset, forcing Germany goalkeeper, Marc Andre ter Stegen, into making several notable saves during the first half.

Meanwhile, Germany’s 21-year-old defender, Malick Thiaw, delivered an impressive performance. Despite enjoying over 65% possession, the hosts struggled to create any shots on goal during the entire first half, often encountering difficulties in playing the ball from their own half. Germany’s misfortune continued when Emre Can lost possession, allowing Cuadrado to deliver a cross for Diaz to head past Ter Stegen and secure the lead for Colombia.

Although Germany briefly increased their tempo, their defensive vulnerabilities remained. The introduction of centre forward, Niclas Fuellkrug, failed to provide the desired improvement in the attacking third, and a handball by Joshua Kimmich handed Colombia an opportunity to double their advantage, with Cuadrado calmly converting the penalty and piling more pressure on German manager, Hansi Flick.
