March 01, (THEWILL) – Jose Peseiro has confirmed his departure as manager of the Nigerian men’s national football team after his contract expired. The Portuguese guided the Super Eagles to the final of the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in Ivory Coast.

In a post on social media platform X on Friday, Peseiro said that his contract had concluded with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), the day before. “It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles”, he stated. “We feel a sense of fulfilment.”

Peseiro thanked NFF president Amaju Pinnick for hiring him, along with current president Ibrahim Gusau and general secretary Mohammed Sanusi. He also expressed gratitude to Secretary Dayo Enebi and all NFF staff. “We will miss you, but we will always be there for you”, Peseiro told the players.

The coach led Nigeria to the AFCON final in February after failing to impress in earlier games in the lead-up to the continental football showpiece. The Super Eagles picked up the silver medal after losing 2-1 to tournament hosts Ivory Coast in the final on February 11.

Peseiro self-scored his 22-month tenure as having included “immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion and enthusiasm.” He now leaves the managerial shoes for his successor to occupy, a successor whose first task will be to qualify Nigeria for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
