September 08, (THEWILL) – Villarreal defeated Polish team Lech Poznan 4-3 at home to begin their 2022–23 UEFA Europa Conference League season on a winning note with Samuel Chukwueze contributing to the victory.
Villarreal fell behind right away as their Polish opponents took advantage of a defensive mistake and scored in the second minute through Michal Skoras. But a magnificent volley goal 30 minutes later from Chukwueze levelled the scores before Villarreal went on to add two more goals in an 8-minute span, both from Alex Baena, to take a 3-1 advantage into the break.
Just after the half, Mikael Ishak converted a penalty for Poznan and turned the momentum back to the advantage of the visitors when he scored again in the 61st to tie the score at three-all. There was however no points to return home with as Francis Coquelin’s amazing late goal for Villarreal in the 89th minute gave the hosts all three points.
It was a productive game for the Nigerian winger Chukwueze as he contributed a goal and an assist in what was a standout individual effort for Villarreal on the night.
Both teams return to their domestic leagues for their next ties on Sunday with Villarreal travelling to Real Betis and Poznan on the road too against Pogon Szczecin.
