August 10, (THEWILL) – American gymnast, Jordan Chiles, will lose her bronze medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise from the 2024 Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favour of an appeal by Romanian gymnast, Ana Barbosu, on Saturday.
The controversy stems from an inquiry filed regarding the results of the floor exercise event. Barbosu and her team argued that the inquiry, which led to Chiles receiving a higher score and the bronze medal, was submitted after the one-minute deadline had passed.
CAS agreed with this assessment, stating: “The inquiry submitted on behalf of Ms Jordan Chiles in the final of the women’s floor exercise was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline.” The court ordered that Chiles’ initial score of 13.666 be reinstated, dropping her below Barbosu’s score of 13.700.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has been instructed by CAS to recalculate the final rankings and reassign medals accordingly. This decision will result in Barbosu moving up to claim the bronze medal, while Chiles will lose her podium position.
The ruling does not affect the gold and silver medal positions, which remain with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and USA’s Simone Biles, respectively. They scored 14.166 and 14.133 in the final, maintaining their top two spots regardless of the scoring controversy involving the bronze medal.
