Chelsea Squeeze Past 10-Man Southampton 3-1 To Top EPL

October 03, (THEWILL) – Chelsea clinched all three points with late goals from Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell, sending the Blues to the top of the Premier League table.

After two devastating defeats to Manchester City and Juventus, the hosts came into this encounter expecting a response, but were heading to a 1-1 draw after James Ward-Prowse scored from the penalty spot. But, Ward-Prowse was sent off and Werner scored with just four minutes remaining, bringing Thomas Tuchel’s squad back to winning ways after a difficult week.

Chelsea scored after just eight minutes when Trevoh Chabolah headed in at the back post following a flick-on by Ruben Loftus-Cheek from a Chilwell corner kick.

When Romelu Lukaku slid a finish across goal and into the far corner, Chelsea appeared to have doubled their lead, but the flag was raised against the Belgian. Werner also had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up before the break.

Southampton, on the other hand, pulled a goal back after Chilwell hacked down Tino Livramento inside the box. Ward-Prowse had the opportunity to convert from 12 yards out and did not waste it to draw level with the hosts at Stamford Bridge.

On 77 minutes, VAR was employed to point out a dangerous tackle by Ward-Prowse on Jorginho for the red card, and Chelsea took advantage of their one-man advantage, with Cesar Azpilicueta assisting Werner four minutes from time.

As Chelsea put the final touches on the game, Chilwell ensured the points with a shot that crossed the line after Lukaku and Mount had hit the woodwork.

Chelsea’s issues after their back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Juventus were visible for much of this encounter. When Mount returned from the bench, though, everything changed. Of course, Ward-red Prowse’s card aided Chelsea’s cause, but Mount provided a platform in the opposition half. In his brief presence, his importance to this team was emphasised.

The victory takes Chelsea top of the table for now, with Liverpool and Manchester City playing each other tomorrow. Next up for them is a trip to Brentford after the international break. Southampton are still looking for their first win of the season and face Leeds United in their next game.
