March 04, (THEWILL) – Chelsea secured a much-needed 1-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday, temporarily easing the pressure on manager, Graham Potter.
Missing key players like Thiago Silva and Reece James, Chelsea played with a back three and it was centre-back, Wesley Fofana, who scored the winning goal early in the second half. Kai Havertz and Joao Felix also had chances for Chelsea, while Leeds’ first opportunity came from Brendan Aaronson, whose strike was blocked by Kalidou Koulibaly.
Despite a largely dominant first half, Chelsea failed to capitalise on their chances, prompting boos from the Stamford Bridge crowd at half-time. The second half started with Sterling missing a good chance, but Fofana finally broke the deadlock with a powerful header from a Chilwell corner.
Chelsea then held on for a nervy finish, including a crucial fingertip save from Kepa Arrizabalaga and a Leeds corner that fizzed across the six-yard box.
The Blues will face Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit. Meanwhile, Leeds will be at home to Brighton and Hove Albion next Saturday.
