Chelsea Get £150m War Chest To Acquire Players

BEVERLY HILLS, May 14, (THEWILL) – In a tight financial climate for most football clubs caused by the coronavirus pandemic, while clubs are limiting expenditure and cutting excesses, reports monitored by THEWILL claim that Chelsea could furnish their impressive German manager, Thomas Tuchel, with a £150 million chest to improve the squad for a better campaign next season.

After spending nearly a quarter of a billion euros to bring in Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and others last summer to bolster their chances, they needed a change of leadership to make it productive in the league and in Europe as they started turning up with the exit of former boss Frank Lampard and the arrival of Tuchel.

The German boss has now led the cash-studded side to both the English FA Cup and UEFA Champions League finals in his very first season, with the team that was teetering on the brink of collapse prior to his coming. He is set to be rewarded with a new and improved contract and a substantial sum to make the squad even better.

Although the breakdown of the reported transfer funds is currently scanty about the details, Chelsea’s huge £220 million summer spend was buoyed by several factors. They made some expensive player sales, unbundling Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and and Alvaro Morata to Juventus, and included money they had been unable to spend previously due to a transfer ban slammed on them.

Player sales could again provide the bulk of the £150 million for the summer. Tammy Abraham could be on the way out, possibly to EPL Europe hopefuls West Ham with a £40 million valuation on his head. Jorginho is also heavily linked with an exit, and, just as Chelsea raised £14 million selling Mario Pasalic last season, they could cash in on their army of loaned players across Europe.

That money can then be ploughed into improving the squad with a true marksman in their striker position where goals have been scarce sometimes, despite investing heavily in forwards Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. Although Borussia Dortmund are determined not to sell Erling Haaland, the sharpshooter remains a potential target for the Blues.

Other targets include Inter’s Lautaro Martinez, a more affordable alternative to Haaland, for whom Dortmund slammed a discouraging €150 million on, and, in the middle of the park, there is the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder target, Marco Verratti, with whom Tuchel worked, for two and a half years, in the French capital.
