January 01, (THEWILL) – On New Year’s Day, English Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest pulled off a rallying comeback as they secured a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at the City Ground.
Despite Raheem Sterling giving Chelsea an early lead, Forest fought back and hit the crossbar before Serge Aurier scored a clinical equaliser just after the hour mark. Substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a late chance to win it for Chelsea, but was unable to convert. It finished all square on one goal apiece and a lot to ponder for Graham Potter’s side.
The point earned by Forest keeps them in the hunt for survival in the EPL, while Chelsea remains seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United in the race for a UEFA Champions League spot for next season.
Chelsea had lost their last three away games and this should be a wake-up call of the need to improve their form on the road if they hope to close the gap on Manchester United and others at the top of the standings.
The next game for the Blues is on Thursday at home against Manchester City. On Wednesday, Forest will play away against Southampton.
