January 07, (THEWILL) – Chelsea is reportedly considering making a move for RB Leipzig’s highly-rated defender, Josko Gvardiol.
The 20-year-old Croatian has been impressing on the pitch and was a key player in helping his country achieve a third-place finish at the World Cup. However, Gvardiol’s £112 million release clause, which becomes active in 2024, may prove to be a stumbling block for the English club.
Tottenham Hotspur is also reportedly interested in signing Gvardiol, but the young defender has named Liverpool as his “dream club.” In an interview recently, Gvardiol said: “My dream club? That would definitely be Liverpool. Since I was little, I watched a lot of their matches with my dad. It is a club that has remained in my heart.”
Despite Gvardiol’s preference for Liverpool, Chelsea may still make a move for the young defender. The Stamford Bridge club recently signed Benoit Badiashile from Monaco, but is reportedly still on the lookout for more defensive options. It remains to be seen if Chelsea will be able to secure a deal for Gvardiol, or if they will be beaten to it by the competition.
Gvardiol’s reputation continues to improve, and his young age means he could potentially play for a team for a decade, making him a potentially valuable investment. However, Chelsea may have to offer a significantly higher fee in order to secure a deal.
