June 20, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have officially announced the acquisition of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, on a six-year contract.

The 25-year-old forward had previously signed a pre-contract agreement last October, solidifying his move to Chelsea for the 2023/2024 season. Chelsea reportedly surpassed Nkunku’s release clause of €60 million to secure his services. Nkunku, who recently concluded a remarkable Bundesliga campaign, shared his excitement about joining Chelsea and revealed that he was eager to showcase his skills to the fans. “A big effort was made to bring me to the club, and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and teammates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch”, he said.

Nkunku’s previous season was marked by injuries, including a knee ligament injury that prevented him from participating in the previous World Cup. Nonetheless, he managed to score 22 goals and provide eight assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, earning him the status of top scorer for RB Leipzig. Having previously played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, Nkunku now aims to prove himself in the English Premier League.

Known for his proficiency in taking advantage of transition attacks, a characteristic prevalent in the Bundesliga, Nkunku’s skill set extends to various aspects of the game. With his agility, adaptability, and unpredictability, he poses a significant challenge for EPL defenders, making him a valuable asset for Chelsea.

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, praised Nkunku’s abilities, pointing to his quality, creativity, and versatility, which will undoubtedly enhance the team’s squad. The acquisition of Nkunku comes at a crucial time, as the club seeks to bolster its attack following a season of underperformance relative to cost. Nkunku’s impressive direct goal contributions over the past two seasons surpass those of all Chelsea’s current attacking options.
