CHAN 2023: Senegal Advances To Semi-Finals With 1-0 Victory Over Mauritania

January 27, (THEWILL) – In a highly contested TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-final tie, Senegal defeated Mauritania 1-0 in Annaba on Friday.

Before the kickoff of the quarter-final match, there was a minute of silence in honour of the Mauritania Football Federation vice-president, Pape Amghar Dieng. He was reported to have died while celebrating their historic 1-0 win over Mali in Oran, which qualified them for the quarter-finals.

In the match itself, the decisive goal came in the 34th minute when Senegal midfielder, Lamine Camara, converted a penalty kick past Mauritanian goalkeeper, Namori Diaw. The penalty was awarded after a challenge in the box by Mauritania defender, Beibou, on Senegal’s Moussa Ndiaye.

The goal was the first that Mauritania had conceded in the tournament and it shifted the momentum in Senegal’s favour. The Senegalese side gained confidence and dominated play for the rest of the first half. Despite several chances for Mauritania, including set pieces and a counterattack, they were unable to level the score.

Senegal held on to their lead until the final whistle and secured their place in the semifinals, where they will face the winner of the match between debutants Madagascar and Mozambique.
