March 02, (THEWILL) – Sheffield United shocked Tottenham Hotspur in a 1-0 victory during the fifth round of this season’s FA Cup on Wednesday night.

Despite dominating the ball during the opening period of the game, Tottenham struggled to create clear chances. Richarlison came closest to scoring for Spurs with a first-time strike just before the half-hour mark, but it sailed over the bar. Lucas Moura’s cross also clipped the woodwork towards the end of a quiet first half, denying Richarlison another chance.

Also, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s weak header back towards Fraser Forster, allowed Ismaila Coulibaly, a clear sight of goal, but he fired wide, and the two teams went into the break goalless. Spurs will blame themselves for not capitalising on these early chances, with their best attempts coming from a distance and being blocked by the Blades’ defence.

Tottenham’s hopes of winning their first FA Cup since 1991 were dashed as Sheffield United’s Iliman Ndiaye, scored the winning goal with just over 10 minutes left on the clock. Their desperation for a goal led them to bring on Harry Kane, but the home team’s substitute, Iliman Ndiaye, proved to be the hero of the night.

The defeat means that Tottenham is now probably facing another trophyless season, while Sheffield United could potentially add a historic FA Cup to their trophy cabinet, as they are also vying for promotion back to the English Premier League. Their next challenge is a quarter-final match against Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane, while Tottenham face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next game.
