Cerofolini’s Heroics Help Frosinone Hold Off Atalanta In Shocking 2-1 Win

August 26, (THEWILL) – Newly promoted Frosinone pulled off a major upset on Saturday, defeating Atalanta 2-1 at the Stadio Benito Stirpe for their first Serie A win since April 2019.

Coming into the contest, Atalanta were favourites after going six matches unbeaten against the Canaries without conceding a goal. However, Frosinone came out strong and took an early lead through Abdou Harroui in the 5th minute after he was played through on a quick counterattack. The home side doubled their advantage midway through the first half when 21-year-old defender, Ilario Monterisi, poked in a goal off a corner kick.

Atalanta attempted to mount a comeback in the second half when veteran striker, Duvan Zapata, pulled one back in the 56th minute. Despite some close chances from substitutes Charles De Ketelaere, in for Nigerian Ademola Lookman, and Gianluca Scamacca, Frosinone’s defence held strong. Goalkeeper Michele Cerofolini came up with a big save in the 75th minute to deny De Ketelaere.

In the end, Frosinone were able to see out their historic victory against the odds. For Atalanta, it was a disappointing setback as they looked to build momentum heading into a crucial stretch of matches. The Canaries will celebrate their monumental win before facing Udinese next week, while La Dea will aim to bounce back quickly when they host Monza.
