October 04, (THEWILL) – Glasgow football club, Celtic, have once more pleaded with fans to refrain from using pyrotechnics during matches. This comes after the club was issued a €23,400 fine by UEFA for their supporters igniting fireworks in the stands prior to their UEFA Champions League opener against Feyenoord last month.
A spokesperson for the Scottish champions expressed concern that despite repeated requests and safety warnings, a small number of fans continue to use pyrotechnics at Celtic matches. They reiterated that pyrotechnics pose a serious risk to supporter safety.
This latest significant sanction from UEFA is a result of this unsafe behavior, with Celtic reiterating their plea for it to stop. The fine comes just hours before their first UCL home match of the season against Lazio.
Pyrotechnics have become an issue at Celtic games over the past few seasons. The club have launched campaigns urging fans not to bring them into stadiums, as well as working with police to try and prevent their use.
However, some supporters continue to smuggle pyrotechnics into matches, leading to sanctions from UEFA that Celtic must pay. The club will be hoping their continued pleas for restraint will see an end to pyrotechnics being used and the risk to safety they bring.
