Cash Strikes Twice To End Villa’s Away Troubles In 3-1 Victory Over Burnley

August 27, (THEWILL) – Matty Cash ended his Aston Villa goal drought to lead his side to a 3-1 win away to Burnley on Sunday.

The defender scored twice in the opening 20 minutes to put Villa in control at Turf Moor. It was Cash’s first goals for Villa since May 2022. Burnley briefly threatened a comeback when Lyle Foster pulled a goal back early in the second half. But Moussa Diaby restored Villa’s two-goal advantage on the hour mark. The result ends Villa’s five-match winless run on the road in the English Premier League.

Cash opened the scoring in the 8th minute, poking home a cross from Ollie Watkins after good work from John McGinn. He doubled Villa’s lead in the 20th minute with a composed finish after exchanging passes with Diaby.

Burnley struggled to create chances in the first half as Villa dominated. Foster’s powerful strike gave the hosts hope early in the second period. But Diaby’s composed finish killed off any chance of a Burnley fightback. The win sees Villa bounce back from their European exertions in midweek.

For Burnley, it is back-to-back home defeats since winning promotion back to the EPL. They will attempt to stem the tide in the EFL Cup on Wednesday away at Nottingham Forest while Villa are at home for the reverse fixture of their UEFA Europa Conference League qualification doubleheader against Hibernian.
