September 18, (THEWILL) – The fact that Ousmane Dembele was not a proper fit for the current footballing philosophy of Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Campos has come out to claim that the club decided against signing him during the summer.

Most clubs knew that Dembele’s deal with the Catalan giants was about to expire and his future at Barcelona was far from certain heading into the summer transfer window. However, he ended up signing a new deal until 2024 and made up his mind to stay, after a long drawn out negotiation process.

Numerous teams were linked to him before he agreed to the new contract, but none more so than French champions, PSG. Campos, who serves as PSG’s football advisor, has now disclosed that the club decided against signing the player due to the system that Christophe Galtier, the club’s new manager, has implemented.

Campos said: “We didn’t sign Dembélé because he’s a winger and we’re playing with another system. I love Dembélé, he’s great, but we had different plans.”

Neymar and Lionel Messi play centrally behind Kylian Mbappe in this formation, with wing-backs on either side of them. Dembele was not bought because he performs best in wide spaces; instead, the club pursued acquisitions that were carefully tailored to the new manager’s ideals. This season, the choice has been successful for all parties concerned as PSG has won all but one of their games so far this season.
