January 17, (THEWILL) – Defending champions, Cameroon, have secured their spot in the TotalEnergies Under-17 Africa Nations Cup 2023, scheduled to take place in Algeria.
The team, led by coach Jean Pierre Fiala Fiala, dominated the tournament opener against Central African Republic with a score of 4-0, thanks to goals from Dorinel Yondjo Matah, Collins Akamba, and Tize Abib. In their second match, they beat Congo Brazzaville 2-0, with a goal from Matah and a late strike from Harouna Djibirin.
This win guaranteed Cameroon a place in the top two of the tournament and a spot in the TotalEnergies U-17 AFCON. The tournament, held in Cameroon’s coastal city of Limbe, will determine the final two teams to join hosts Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, and Zambia in the expanded event.

Central African Republic and Congo Brazzaville will now compete for the last remaining spot. Cameroon previously won the competition in Tanzania in 2019. The TotalEnergies U-17 AFCON 2023 will take place from April 29 to May 19, 2023, in Algeria.
