September 18, (THEWILL) – Italian international, Mattia Caldara, is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing ankle surgery, his club, AC Milan, confirmed on Monday.
The Serie A giants said the defender went under the knife for a minor operation on his ankle, with his recovery expected to take around three months. It means Caldara will miss at least until December as he works his way back to full fitness.
Milan coach, Stefano Pioli, had already warned ahead of the weekend’s heavy 5-1 defeat to rivals Inter that he expected the 29-year-old to be ruled out “for some time” due to the ankle issue.
Caldara had returned to Milan this summer following loan spells away from the San Siro at Venezia and Spezia. However, he is yet to feature for the Rossoneri so far this campaign.
His surprise inclusion in Milan’s UEFA Champions League squad was only due to squad registration rules regarding homegrown players. The Rossoneri kick off their European campaign at home to Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.
