BEVERLY HILL, January 15, (THEWILL) – The interim President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Constant Omari, was on hand to welcome the President of world football governing body, FIFA, Gianni Infantino, on the latter’s arrival in Yaounde, Cameroon on Friday.
Omari met Infantino as he arrived the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport in the country’s capital city ahead of the Saturday kick-off of the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN), Cameroon 2020.
The CHAN is a biennial football competition exclusively for home-based players in Africa. In the midst of civil unrest and coronavirus restrictions, Cameroon picked up the hosting responsibility after initial hosts Ethiopia pulled out. The competition, which began in 2009, will be hosted in four stadiums in three separate cities in Cameroon.
Accompanying Omari on the welcome party for Infantino was Cameroon’s Football Federation President, Seydou Mbombo Njoya and Africa football legend, Samuel Eto’o Fils, Cameroon’s most decorated striker.
It is Infantino’s first visit to the Central African country. While there, he is expected to attend Friday’s CAF Executive Committee meeting before witnessing the elevation of former long-term CAF President Issa Hayatou to the position of honorary President of CAF on Friday as well.
In addition to these, Infantino will be a very important spectator at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde for the opening CHAN match between Cameroon and Zimbabwe on Saturday, January 16.
