May 23, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met the families of the victims of the explosion in Kano to condole with them.
The families, accompanied by various community leaders resident in the Sabon Gari area of Kano, including Chief Nicholas Ibekwe, the Eze Ndigbo, were assembled at the Palace of the Emir, His Royal Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero for the meeting with the President.
A statement issued on Monday by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said the president, who was in Kano to officiate at the Nigerian Air Force Day and 58th Anniversary Celebration, met with the family members of the nine deceased persons at the palace of the Emir of Kano.
Describing the incident as sad and unfortunate, the President said he was “extremely pained by the loss of lives and injury to many as a result of the explosion.”
He added, “My thoughts and that of the nation are with the bereaved families. I hope the injured will recover fully at the earliest possible time.”
THEWILL reports that an explosion last week rocked the Sabongari area of Kano state leading to the death of nine persons with as many more injured.
As per the official reports, nine people lost their lives and 22 were injured and receiving treatment.
President Buhari drew parallels between Kano and his native Daura and described the palace of the Emir as his own home. He commended the traditional institution and the people of Kano for standing with him at all times.
He conveyed Kano community’s appreciation for the numerous things the federal government is doing in the state and prayed for the emergence of good leaders in the coming elections.
Speaking earlier, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said his government had given the sum of N9 million to the families of the deceased as compensation for their losses.
The state government also gave N2 million to 10 people who were seriously injured in the explosion and N1 million to those with minor injuries.
The governor also said the owner of a business centre affected by the explosion was given N2million, while Winners Academy, which students suffered injuries from the explosion, got N1million.
On his part, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, thanked the president for his gesture, saying the people of Kano are not surprised by the president’s visit because he (Buhari) has always identified with the masses.
He prayed that credible leaders will emerge for Nigeria during the forthcoming general election.
