Brighton Snatch Late Draw Against Everton Via Young’s Own Goal

November 04, (THEWILL) – Everton were denied a sixth win in eight matches on Saturday after Brighton and Hove Albion equalised late at Goodison Park courtesy of an unfortunate own goal by Ashley Young. The 1-1 draw halted the momentum Sean Dyche has been able to evoke in his charges.

Everton looked on course for victory after Vitalii Mykolenko scored his first goal in 18 months in the 7th minute. However, a wicked deflection off Young from Kaoru Mitoma’s cross in the 84th minute secured a point for the visitors.

The Seagulls dominated possession but found it difficult to break down Everton’s sturdy defence marshalled by James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite. Lewis Dunk thought he had equalised with a volley only for it to be ruled out by VAR for offside.

Everton will be disappointed not to capitalise on their lead. Still, the draw represents progress as they move further away from the relegation zone under Dyche. Brighton’s form has dipped after a strong start, with manager Roberto De Zerbi still searching for consistency.

The unpredictable nature of the EPL was in stark relief at Goodison Park. While Everton continue their rise, Brighton – top four contenders last season and bright sparks this season – still seek to rediscover their best form. The late equaliser should buoy the Seagulls as the battle for survival and European places heats up.
