Brentford Beat Liverpool 3-1 To Halt Reds’ Winning Run

January 02, (THEWILL) – Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four of the English Premier League took a major hit on Monday, after a 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

Brentford took the lead in the first half through an own goal from Liverpool defender, Ibrahima Konate, who deflected a Bryan Mbeumo, inswinger into his own net. Yoane Wissa added a second goal for Brentford just before half-time, heading in a cross from Mathias Jensen.

Liverpool made a triple substitution at half-time as Jurgen Klopp, made the decisive call to take out talismanic defender, Virgil van Dijk and they pulled a goal back early in the second half through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s header.

However, Brentford sealed the win late on when Mbeumo capitalized on a mistake from Konate to score the third goal. The loss at Brentford Community Stadium was the first time the Bees had beaten Liverpool since 1938 and ended the Reds’ four-game winning streak in the league.

The win sees the Bees climb to seventh place in the English Premier League standings. They will now face West Ham in the FA Cup on Saturday, having previously beaten them in the league. Liverpool, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from this defeat by taking on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup. The Reds currently sit one place and two points above Brentford in the table.
