July 08, (THEWILL) – The Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday began screening of nominees for appointment as national commissioners of the electoral body.
The nominees, including one of the aides of President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, were in the Senate for the exercise.
THEWILL reports that leaders of political parties, civil society organisations and lawmakers, among others, had condemned her inclusion in the list of nominees.
They argued her alleged partisanship does not qualify her to occupy the position.
Other nominees include: Professor Muhammad Sani Kallah (Katsina); Professor Kunle Cornelius Ajayi (Ekiti); Saidu Babura Ahmad (Jigawa); Professor Sani Muhammad Adam (North-Central) and Dr. Baba Bila (North East).
Onochie arrived at the Senate wing of the National Assembly about 11 am; accompanied by the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Babajide Omoworare.
She was immediately ushered into the office of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Kabri Gaya.
