August 16, (THEWILL) – Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund has revealed that their winger Thorgan Hazard will be unavailable for their Super Cup tie against Bavarian giants Bayern München on Tuesday.
Dortmund coach Marco Rose revealed that the Belgian international sustained an ankle injury in BVB’s 5-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt last Saturday and will be sidelined. At the Monday pre-match conference ahead of the fixture, Rose said: “Thorgan Hazard will be out, he injured his ankle. It was already hurting before the break, but he fought through it.
Hazard’s absence worsens the list of worries for Dortmund because they will be without defenders Mats Hummels, Emre Can Raphael Guerreiro, Thomas Meunier, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Mateu Morey while also missing the services of midfielder Julian Brandt.
That long list of absentees for the game places them at a defensive disadvantage against the firepower of the Bayern side that is boasting of the still-shooting Robert Lewandowski. The Pole was not to be denied another opening day goal by Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer over the weekend.
Lewandoski made sure to score to extend his scoring streak to a record-equalling 11 games and will be looking to punish Dortmund on Tuesday, if their makeshift backline is not up to their responsibilities in the Super Cup.
A victory for Bayern will ease the pressure on their new manager Julian Nagelsmann as he has struggled to find a win since moving to the Allianz Arena from RB Leipzig with the exit of sextuple-winning coach Hansi Flick, who has taken over the German national football team.
The DFL-Supercup or German Super Cup is a one-off football match in Germany that features the winners of the Bundesliga championship, which is Bayern, and the DFB-Pokal, which Dortmund won. The DFL-Supercup is run by the Deutsche Fußball Liga.
