Borno Monarch Seeks Extension Of Medical Services To North East IDPs

SAN FRANCISCO, February 24, (THEWILL) – A case has been made for the extension of medical services to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East.

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi , made the call on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the state capital as he pleaded with health-related organisations to come in and provide professional services to the IDPs who are being resettled in various camps in Maiduguri and other centres in the region.
The Shehu, who praised the Borno State Government for deploying some medical personnel to provide services within the numerous IDPs camps in Maiduguri, appealed to other health related organisations and volunteer doctors to come to the assistance of the IDPs.

The Shehu made the plea while receiving members of a group, Doctors Around the Earth, who paid him a courtesy call at his palace in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Welcoming his guests, the monarch said: “I commend doctors who were in Borno State to render professional assistance to those affected by insurgency even though their mission was to fight Ebola in West Africa.”

While wishing his guests success in their mission, the monarch said there was still need for more health organisations to come to the assistance of the IDPs.

Speaking earlier, the founder and President General of Doctors Around the Earth, Dr. Ibrahim Khadjam, represented by Mrs. Hauwa Mohammed, said they decided to extend their mission to the North East in order to assist victims of the Boko Haram insurgency at various camps particularly in Maiduguri, Gombe and some neighbouring countries of Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic.

The founder disclosed that the organisation was established to respond to the outbreak of Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea where over 3, 000 lives were lost.
