Black Tax And Other Things That Come With Adulthood

November 20, (THEWILL) – For Gen Z and millennials, the time has come to be grown-ups but adulthood has its many troubles.

With the boomers retiring, young people are taking over the workforce, moving out of their parent’s home and essentially starting their lives.

But adulthood is not as easy as expected, and we find ourselves wondering how our parents managed.

So here are a couple of things that irk about adulthood;

Black tax

Black tax is a South African term, now widely used around the world. A term acted out in Black communities, it refers to the financial support that is expected of a black working-class individual by their families. Often, these are individuals with higher education or a better-paying job than the rest of the family.

In Black communities, a child is taught from an early age that a part of the family’s success rests in his hands. It is why certain characters are instilled and phrases such as “remember where you come” and “know the child of whom you are” are repeated to the child.

Sometimes, it is the expectation, other times, you do not have a choice. The aim is for this person to become the umbrella for the family.

Paying bills and utilities

Every single person I asked said the thing they hate the most about adulthood is paying bills.

Imisioluwa said, “The fact that there are more expenses and responsibilities as an adult. You no longer have the privilege of depending on your parents to meet your needs.”

Bills and utilities are the horsemen of death for every adult. There are electricity bills, rent, food, petrol, car repairs and other utilities. Cars break down, usually inopportune times.

Almost everywhere you turn, there is one thing or another to pay for. It makes you wish for times when you weren’t concerned about paying for food because there is definitely rice at home.

Pondering on what to eat/cook

Most of our adulthood seems like it is filled with thoughts of what we are going to eat and how we are to go about cooking it.

For those who have to cook, they have to think of the hours spent in the kitchen and the clean up after.

Most people resign to buying food. But, even that will affect your bank account.

And those who earn enough to have cooks and cleaners, how lucky they are!

Spending your money

I know you might be thinking about whose money you had been spending before.

But it does come as a surprise that every single thing you own or buy has to come from your account for the most part.

Wouldn’t it be great if you had someone funding your lifestyle? People with wealthy parents might be fortunate here, they get the chance to call home whenever they are in a fix.

Work

Work is stressful but important, as every adult has to work for money. Depending on the nature of your job, it ordinarily is not easy.

It will take your time, energy and strength but, the opposite of that is unemployment and nobody wants that.

So, every morning, you have to wake up and work even if you don’t feel like it.

Taking care of yourself while sick

If you’re unmarried and single, then you would have to take care of yourself when you feel sick.

Most times, you would have to go to the clinic or hospital by yourself.

Of course, your friends might help you but, it is still largely up to you to take care of yourself.

Midlife Crisis

People who are having a midlife crisis are thought to be struggling with their own mortality and, somewhere during midlife, they ditch some of their responsibilities in favor of fun.

That’s why the term “midlife crisis” often causes people to picture mistresses and sports cars.

This may produce feelings of intense depression, remorse, and high levels of anxiety, or the desire to achieve youthfulness or make drastic changes to their current lifestyle or feel the wish to change past decisions and events.

Existential Crisis

Existential crisis, also known as existential dread, are moments when an individual questions whether their life has meaning, purpose, or value, and are negatively impacted by the contemplation.

It may be commonly, but not necessarily, tied to depression or inevitably negative speculations on purpose in life such as the futility of all effort (e.g., “if one day I will be forgotten, what is the point of all of my work?”).

This issue of the meaning and purpose of human existence is a major focus of the philosophical tradition of existentialism.

Getting married

As much as young adults, ladies inclusive, want to have someone to share life with, commitment has become a major factor.

For the majority of young men out there, all they want is a lady who will pull up at their beck and call, and will disappear as soon as they snap their fingers. The ladies, on the other hand, want the perks of a romantic relationship without the responsibility.

The young generation does not want to be burdened with the responsibilities that come with marriage. If allowed, they wish to be single, while enjoying the baby boy/baby girl life.
