February 16, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid secured a comfortable 4-0 victory over bottom side Elche, with Karim Benzema leading the charge as he became the second-highest La Liga scorer of all time for the club.
The Madrid captain scored twice from the penalty spot to take his Spanish top-flight tally to 230 goals, overtaking legendary striker Raul in the process. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, with 311 goals, has scored more for the club.
Madrid took the lead in the eighth minute when Marco Asensio, slotted past Edgar Badia, after receiving the ball from Dani Carvajal. Benzema then doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark with a calmly taken penalty, before repeating the feat just before half-time. Luka Modric completed the rout 10 minutes from time, drilling a superb shot into the top corner.
The win saw Carlo Ancelotti’s side close the gap on league leaders Barcelona to eight points, taking advantage of the Catalan club’s Europa League action on Thursday. The victory was particularly satisfying for Madrid, who were fresh off the back of their record-extending fifth Club World Cup crown.
Madrid will be looking to build on their victory when they face Osasuna on Saturday, while Elche will take on Espanyol on Sunday.
