March 09, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the fourth consecutive season after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 on aggregate in the last 16.

PSG, on the other hand, failed to progress past this stage for the fifth time in seven years, even with their star-studded lineup. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the decisive goal against his former team, while substitute, Serge Gnabry, secured Bayern’s victory in the final moments.

The game was played at a good tempo in midfield without posing a significant threat to either penalty area, aside from an early Kylian Mbappe strike that was gathered by Yann Sommer. As the first half progressed, PSG applied more pressure, and it took a goalmouth scramble and a combination of Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt, and Sommer to deny Lionel Messi.

Bayern had penalty appeals waved away soon after the restart when Choupo-Moting went down under pressure from Danilo Pereira, while the same player had what appeared to be a legal goal ruled out only moments later. PSG almost managed an instant response through Sergio Ramos, but his header was tipped wide of the post by a diving Sommer to preserve Bayern’s two-goal aggregate cushion. In need of two goals, the visitors looked flat and out of ideas.

It was a poor night for Mbappe overall, and Messi was not much better. An outstanding tackle from Alphonso Davies ensured Mbappe did not score. By the end, PSG had thrown Ramos up front, leaving gaps at the back, and they were punished when Joao Cancelo slipped the ball through to Gnabry to seal face Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday, while PSG will have to regroup and focus on their next match in Ligue 1 against Brest.
