October 29, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling Bundesliga match, merciless Bayern Munich defeated Mainz 6-2 to move atop the standings, with Jamal Musiala scoring his tenth goal of the season to add to the rout.
Julian Nagelsmann’s team had been absent from the top spot for 57 days, but on Saturday, a sixth straight victory allowed them to surpass Union Berlin to return to the summit of the Bundesliga.
At the Allianz Arena, goals in the first half from Serge Gnabry, the incredibly impressive Musiala, and Sadio Mane eased them into a comfortable lead. It was a fortunate goal for the Senegal forward though as he scored off the rebound after Robin Zentner had saved his penalty.
Sven Ulreich saved a penalty kick from Jonathan Burkardt on the verge of halftime but could not deny Silvan Widmer a goal as Mainz attempted a comeback, but goals from Leon Goretzka and Mathys Tel put Bayern out of reach. Marcus Ingvartsen scored Mainz’s second goal by taking advantage of Ulreich’s awful error, and the in-form Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting sealed the victory with a late strike against his former team.
Following this humiliating loss, Mainz must lick their wounds and regroup for their home game against Wolfsburg next week. Bayern will play Inter in a dead-rubber midweek to end their UEFA Champions League season.
