January 27, (THEWILL) – Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich needed to wade through injuries but managed to claim a narrow 3-2 victory away at Augsburg on Saturday, in the Bavarian derby. Despite missing nine first-team players, the reigning champions dug deep to earn the three points, cutting the gap to one point behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
First-half goals from 19-year-old Aleksandar Pavlovic and Alphonso Davies put Bayern in control before Harry Kane added a third just before the hour mark. However, the hosts fought back through Ermedin Demirovic and a late penalty to make it a nervy finale for the visitors.
The result leaves Bayern well-positioned to mount another title challenge this season. Tuchel will be hoping his side can avoid any further injuries though, with the squad already stretched to its limits.
For Augsburg, this was an improved performance that should give them confidence going forward. Demirovic caused problems and was unlucky not to earn his side a point. The narrow defeat leaves Augsburg in 13th place in the standings as the season approaches its halfway point.
Both sides are next in action on Saturday. Bayern host Borussia Monchengladbach, while Augsburg travel to VfL Bochum.
