January 20, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich could consider working towards a transfer for superstar striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of the season, when his current contract would have only one year left.

Since joining Bayern as a free agent from Borussia Dortmund in 2014, Lewandowski has 328 goals in 356 matches. For the sixth consecutive season, he is on pace to score more than 40 goals in all competitions, and he has averaged more than a goal per game since 2019.

As THEWILL reported, the Pole was also named Best FIFA Men’s Player of 2021, and many believed he would have won the 2020 Ballon d’Or had the award not been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Despite the fact that Lewandowski is currently the top striker in the world, it has been reported in Germany that Bayern could let him go within the next few months.

Contract talks between the team and the player should begin soon. Bayern will want to sort his contract out before the end of the season, and if no agreement can be reached, the Bundesliga champions may have to authorise a summer sale to earn some transfer money.

THEWILL recalls that Bayern lost free agent David Alaba to Real Madrid and they have taken a hard line against such situations recurring in the future. They were rumoured to be eager to sell winger Kingsley Coman until he recently signed a new long-term contract.

The German giants are prepared to offer Lewandowski a one-year contract extension on the same conditions as his existing deal, in accordance with their club policy for players over 30. They might also agree to a two-year contract if he agrees to a pay decrease.

If Bayern decides to sell, Lewandowski might appeal to a number of major European clubs looking for a striker, even if just as a short-term solution due to his age.

Strikers are wanted by Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Chelsea. PSG has been associated with Erling Haaland, and all six have been linked with the Norwegian.

Bayern Munich is one of the clubs interested in signing the Dortmund star, who would serve as a substitute for Lewandowski in Munich if he arrived — whether immediately or over time.
